The University of Victoria was host to a unique musical event on Saturday night, one which feted Mount Doug high school with an inspired night of music featuring contributions from two of its most famous alumni.

Producer David Foster and pop star Nelly Furtado were on hand for the concert and talent showcase held at the University Centre’s Farquhar Auditorium, the finale of a sprawling 10-day celebration honoring the Gordon Head high school’s 80th anniversary.

“I love Mount Doug!” bellowed the recently-married Foster, whose new wife of just over a week, Yolanda Hadid, was in attendance. “That’s why I’m not on my honeymoon, I’m here in Victoria.”

Foster and Furtado were on hand Saturday night primarily to judge Mount Doug Idol, a talent competition featuring former Mount Doug students and relatives of the school’s alumni. Tickets sales, including a pre-concert reception featuring both Furtado and Foster, were to benefit the Mount Doug Alumni Association, a registered charity that helps current and future students with bursaries and scholarships.

The talent competition was bookended on either side by musical travelogues that paid tribute to Victoria’s most famous musical exports, both of whom were in fine form during the three-hour event.

The evening began with an all-star band playing some of Foster’s biggest hits.

The group — keyboardist Morry Stearns, bassist Dennis Ferbey, drummer Brad Clark, singer-keyboardist Duncan Meiklejohn, singers April Gislason and Diane Pancel, keyboardist Thomas Kinzel, saxophonist Chris Millington, and guitarists Norm McPherson and Steve McDonald — kicked their 30-minute set off with Wildflower, Foster’s first official hit with the group Skylark.

The Foster creations that followed — I Have Nothing, a song he co-wrote for The Bodyguard; his No. 1 smash, St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion); and Unforgettable, a Natalie Cole/Nat King Cole duet tackled nicely on this night by Meiklejohn and Pancel — all demonstrated Foster’s expert writing and arranging abilities.

But when the man himself stepped to the stage and took a seat behind his piano, his strength as entertainer and showman took over.

A snappily dressed Foster, who left Mount Doug in 1966 following his Grade 11 year — to pursue a career in music, natch — was all smiles throughout. He paused mid-song at one point to take a cellphone picture, and when he wasn’t tossing out one-liners like they were nothing, he was relishing his role as the Simon Cowell of the judging panel, which also included Furtado and his daughter, Amy Foster.

“I’m feeling the love,” MC Terry David Mulligan said following a round of praise from the judges. “But where’s the bile here?”

“You suck!” Foster joked, delivering on cue.

There were some genuine funny moments throughout. After welcoming his fellow jurors to the stage, Foster was interrupted by a video tribute from two former Mount Doug students, NBA star Steve Nash and former Yahoo! president Jeff Mallett, who were conveying Nash’s last-minute bid for Idol inclusion.

The comedy carried over to the judging panel. Foster called Furtado “Paula” at one point, implying her niceties were of the Abdul variety.

High marks were given to the five contestants, who were a mixed bunch, in terms of style, but uniformly great.

Amanda Wood sang jazz; Joni Anderson did country; Cristine Seeber tackled popera; Justin Hewitt represented the folk side and Kale Penny the rock side.

In the end, Penny won the title of Mount Doug Idol. For his Chris Cornell-inspired cover of Billie Jean, the

22-year-old frontman of Victoria band Sunday Buckets earned a Yamaha electric piano and Air Canada flight anywhere in North America.

He also earned the overwhelming good graces of Foster, who performed Man in Motion with the young winner.

“I’ve been around. But this talent pool was unbelievable,” Foster said. “Forget Mount Doug, forget Victoria. This was world-class.”

Foster brought Furtado on stage for the show-stopping finale, the highlight of which was Try, a Furtado original that Foster laced with some understated piano.

The last time Furtado performed at UVic Centre was during her own Mount Doug graduation ceremony 15 years ago. She has grown as an artist since then, to say the least: Furtado closed the night with her hit, I’m Like a Bird, which drew a nomination for song of the year at the Grammy Awards in 2001.

During afternoon rehearsals, I’m Like a Bird morphed from an acoustic number to a full-band workout, at Foster’s suggestion. Furtado was happy to let Foster have his way, answering with a refrain that typified this night of celebration in honour of the second-oldest school in the city: “Let’s have some fun!”

Nelly Furtado will be judging at 'Mount Doug Idol', a singing competition held by the Alumni association of her high school in her hometown, Victoria. The event will happen tonigh at 7 p.m.

The talent show comes as the closing number for the nine-day long celebration of the Mount Douglas Secondary School 80th anniversary. The five finalists, narrowed down from over 100 alumni contestants, will perform for Nelly, fellow judge music producer David Foster and the Victorian audience.

The winner will recieve a trip courtesy of Air Canada and prizes from Tom Lee Music, aside from the chance to showcase their talent.

In the run up to the 2011 Scotiabank Giller Prize, broadcast live on CBC tomorrow from Toronto, we managed to snag an exclusive interview with the multi-platinum Canadian singer-songwriter, Grammy winner and all round superstar Nelly Furtado. She's presenting one of the six nominated books, Esi Edugyan's book Half Blood Blues, "an electric, heart-breaking story about music, race, love and loyalty, and the sacrifices we ask of ourselves, and demand of others, in the name of art." We spoke to Nelly about the book, how reading continues to inspire her music, and how CBC opens her mind.

As a musician, how are you enjoying the book, and do you think non-music lovers can enjoy it too?

It's very entertaining. I like it 'cause of the musical aspect, but it just kind of pulls you in. I think if you're into prose, if you're in to a unique perspective then you'll definitely enjoy it.

For anyone that hasn't read the book (left, and author Esi Edugyan), please tell them why they should...

It's very colourful. It's extremely visual and really beautiful. The way it's written, it has a real beauty to it. The writing style is very unique and fun. It's also historical, a lot of the book is based in Germany, from 1940 - 1945, you get another perspective of Nazi Germany.

How do you feel about the Giller Prize Gala, with Lang Lang, your fellow presenters and meeting the author?

I'm excited about it! I'm thrilled! It's pretty exciting, yeah, Lang Lang is really exciting. I mean, he's such a well loved and amazing performer, and I love Robbie Robertson! I'm a big fan, h's super influential, I love him. It's going to be a lot of fun, and it's interesting, Esi Edugyan studied a creative writing programme at the University of Victoria - it's funny because at one point I was still deciding between persuing music and doing a creative writing degree, actually at the University of Victoria. I got in to the programme, but I never showed up! I left when I got a record deal and never went back... I believe I'm still enrolled!

Have you ever considered going back to the writing, trying it out again?

Yeah! Totally, it's still a dream of mine. I mean I definitely promised my writing teachers over the years that I would pursue more writing. I only did a year at college, but, yeah, it's something... I recently wrote an article for The Globe & Mail, it was kind of like unleashing a whole other side of my brain that I kept dormant for a little while. I definitely want to get back in to it.

When you're on tour, do you have a lot of down time, going from one city to the next, is that when you like to read?

Yeah, I read a lot. I really love books, you know. I'm kind of excited that one of my favourite authors is nominated at the Gillers, Michael Ondaatje. His books are some of the first books I really truly fell in love with as an adult. Yeah, books can inspire songs. I'm writing my new album right now, and I'm finding nothing creates a better mental stimulation and inspiration than a novel. The last book I read before this one was Isabel Allende, Island Beneath the Sea, and I just thought it was incredible. It's about Haiti in the 1800s, about slavery, about the French. It inspired songs that are on my new album. It's kind of cool that her book is about merging those worlds with jazz, trying to do that with the book. I think the worlds cross quite regularly in music. On the road, yeah, I bring a book with me all the time. I read on the plane a lot, I actually read a lot of newspapers on the plane but I also like audio, I like listening to talk radio, things like that.

Do you listen to podcasts?

No, I've never really got in to podcasts, I probably should!

There are some amazing CBC ones you can check out...

I listen to CBC a whole lot! I learn quite a lot, I think it's about perspective, you know. As a song writer, as whatever kind of writer, in general I think - especially today - things are moving so fast it's great to just get fresh perspectives on things. When you hear a lot of different opinions on different subjects on things going on in the world, be it politics or whatever it is, it's exciting for the brain. It opens your mind and books do the same thing.

This book is set during WWII, and you said the other book was set in the 1800s, do you prefer period books or do you like modern books too?

It just depends, I mean, my favourite author is Paulo Coelho (bottom right) actually. I can relate to him because I really believe that art, while it doesn't have to be, is most wonderful when it attracts lots of people but can be quite profound and life changing at the same time. When it's done right, it can be amazing, and can change people's lives. I think Paulo Coelho's work can do that. I think he's changed many lives, through books such as The Alchemist. That's got to be a valid thing, that's got to mean something. I'm not afraid of things like that, I pursue that in my music too and I always have. I think I like making music because I can reach a really broad audience, and it's not over intellectualised at all, you know, you're just making music and making people smile, making them feel things. A song can mean something completely different to me than to the next person. It's a communal thing writing songs, it's your song when you write it and then once one person hears it, it just belongs to everyone else. I think that's beautiful and it never ceases to amaze me. I was writing a song just the other night, and I thought it meant one thing and somebody else who heard it went to a whole other place and it was speaking to them. It's fun... I didn't answer your question! The funny part is that I'm reading Half Blood Blues right now, but I was also reading a book by another Canadian author - she used to work for CBC - Karen Levine who wrote Hana's Suitcase (bottom left). I met her at a dinner and I got a book from her for my daughter. My daughter encouraged me to read the book, and it's also based in Nazi Germany. It's about the holocaust, and then this book came to me, Half Blood Blues... I love when that happens! It's exciting, it's like you've gone on a journey without even leaving your bedroom! Like you've gone to another world... and it's fascinating. When I was a kid, you know, books took me there. Locking yourself in your room and just living inside that book. It's fantastic.

Nelly Furtado, Ron MacLean and Lisa Ray are just some of the bold-face names participating in the 2011 Scotiabank Giller Prize gala, it was announced Wednesday.

The Toronto event, which will be hosted by CBC personality Jian Ghomeshi, pits authors David Bezmozgis, Lynn Coady, Esi Edugyan, Zsuzsi Gartner, Patrick deWitt and Michael Ondaatje up against each other for the $50,000 prize.

Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard, singer-songwriter Robbie Robertson and actor Zaib Shaikh round out the presenters.

“The art of storytelling — whether through music, film, or literature — is incredibly important and I’m honoured to help pay homage to the work of our country’s finest literary talent,” Robertson said in a statement.

The gala will be broadcast live Nov. 8 on CBC’s bold TV.

Nelly Furtado is being true to her school, agreeing to perform with a group of singing contestants next month in a fundraiser.

The pop music star will sing at a concert Nov. 19 that's being organized by alumni of her alma mater, Mount Douglas secondary in Saanich.

The event marks the culmination of Mount Doug Idol, an American Idol-style competition created by fellow Mount Doug grad David Foster.

The music producer will judge the singing competition, staged to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Mount Doug secondary.

Event co-organizer Kevin Sing said it was Foster who persuaded Furtado to participate.

"[Foster] said, 'You gotta come back and help your school out.' "

Foster leads a panel of judges for the singing competition. Furtado will join competition finalists for the concert at the University of Victoria's Farquhar Auditorium, which has a seating capacity of 1,228.

Sing said Mount Doug Idol accepts audition recordings from alumni or their offspring.

Contest details are at www.mountdougalumni.com.

"We're looking for singers only. That's what David wants. He's looking for his next star. He wants to find it from his old school," Sing said.

Entries close at midnight Oct. 14. Submissions can be dropped off at DFH Real Estate offices on Vancouver Island.

Sing, president of the Mount Doug Alumni Association, said ticket prices range from $25 to $200.

Tickets are available first to alumni, then to the public.

He expects up to $80,000 will be raised for the alumni association, which funds scholarships, teams and other school-related endeavours.

Last January, I was invited to Africa. Somehow, I knew it was time to come home.

While the people, the places left such strong impressions, the hope I left Africa with was more profound than anything else.

I learned so much about community, spirituality and, of course, song and dance, African rhythms, and the sustainable work Free The Children does in true partnership with communities in Kenya and worldwide – Sierra Leone, India, Ecuador, China to name a few.

I learned how one country’s political realities can affect all the nations sharing Africa. I learned about Moammar Gadhafi as a leader and dictator. I felt so ignorant but, at the same time, enlightened. My thoughts immediately went back to a concert I performed as part of a celebration thrown by someone described as an “oil sheik” in Italy in 2007. That night, I met a “son of Gadhafi” who had helped pay for the celebration. I didn’t know much about Libya then; in Kenya, I began to learn more.

A month or two after I returned from Kenya, as the Libyan civil war heated up, I found myself, BlackBerry in hand at 3 a.m., unable to sleep: In Libya, people who rightly believed the cost of freedom was worth it because the benefits were tenfold, were being killed; people were living things I couldn’t truly fathom, but I could feel the weight of them inside my heart. At that moment, in an act of solidarity, I sent a tweet about my intentions to return money I felt wasn’t truly mine.

I decided to give the $1-million (what I was paid to cover all expenses for the 2007 concert) to Free The Children, but wanted a plan that would include the people of Libya. I decided on a sustainable program, rather than immediate aid, inspired by the work I had seen in action with Free The Children in Kenya. I wanted to support women’s rights in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions of Libya, Egypt, Tunisia and Gaza. I wanted to help educate girls so they might have a place in the new democratic regimes in MENA postrevolution – a revolution many women helped spark.

I also wanted to build another school in Kenya like the beautiful Kisaruni school where I spent life-changing days – a school that would support brave girls like the ones I had met, girls so confident they put my 14-year-old self to shame. I wanted and needed the help of youth across North America, so I’ve set up a matching program through Free The Children to inspire youth to do more fundraising and believe in the “power of we.”

I vividly remember my life-changing experience at the concert in Italy in 2007. Then, it felt like a story I could tell my grandchildren about the brutal but very real divide between the extremely wealthy and the extremely poor. I felt I had seen the “other side” – an “other” rarely known by someone with my humble beginnings. At the time, I felt like a servant performing at an invisible king’s court, realizing for the first time just how common the role of “entertainer” is in the grand scheme of the ages. That said, I realized my price tag for the evening would have raised the eyebrows of my music conductor grandfather in the Azores. Now I understand that the feeling in the pit of my stomach was just the toll of that amazing bell we all have within that signifies a new journey in life. Then, the sound was faint. Today, it rings louder than ever in my heart. It’s so ironic that I went to Kenya intending “to help” and left as the one who received the most charity.

The world is and always will be complicated. Moral dilemmas will continue to be present in my career, which attempts to merge corporate and emotional needs on a daily basis. The world is changing faster than we can handle. Money rules.

Yet, in that rural town in Kenya near Kisaruni High School, God rules. I now laugh at the phrase “Third World,” because the “Third World” is so full of human triumph. In many ways, it is the heart of the spiritual world. A name like “third eye world” would be more appropriate. It is the world that contains the people who will save us with their proximity to God, primordial relevance and belief in the human senses and sensitivities – the very things that make us vital as humans and will ensure our survival. We just need to wake up and start joining forces.

The student of life within me has been summoned and humbled. When roll call is read, I will forever be present with a recent map in hand – a map that I hope, one day, will be void of the borders that separate us.

We are so excited to tell you that Grammy award-winner and new Free The Children ambassador Nelly Furtado has just announced at We Day Toronto that she will be donating $1,000,000 to Free The Children to build a second girls secondary school in Kenya.

It's a cause that really matters to the singer, who explained to the We Day crowd, "I believe in children, I believe in youth, and I believe in empowering girls."

Nelly traveled to Kenya earlier this year and, after getting a first-hand look at the lives of girls in Kenya - many of whom are not able to attend school - Nelly was moved to take action. "I'm giving this gift because I was inspired by my visit to Kenya," she said. "I left a part of my heart in Kenya and I can't wait to go back."

Nelly is also encouraging all of you to help out too. Her donation comes in two parts: an initial $500,000 and another 500,000 to set up a challenge grant with which she will match every dollar youth donate to Free The Children, up to $500,000. It's all meant to help young women in the Middle East and North Africa.

"At the end of the day this is about girls empowerment and about sustainability."

The crowd at We Day got a special look at what Nelly's contribution means to Kenyan girls when Susan, a girl that Nelly befriended while in Kenya, made a surprise appearance onstage. Wearing her new school uniform, Susan thanked Nelly saying, "Many of my friends in Africa do not go to school. But your gift will end this trend."

Nelly Furtado is donating $1-million to global development charity Free the Children. The Canadian pop singer made the announcement Tuesday, Sept. 27 in front of 18,000 students gathered at Toronto's Air Canada Centre for We Day, the charity's annual event.

Furtado's donation will fund two new programs supporting girls in the Maasai Mara region of Kenya and in other parts of North Africa and the Middle East. The funds will build an all-girls boarding school in Kenya, allowing for hundreds of girls to get an education and grow to be community leaders.

"It's about empowering girls and thinking about sustainable solutions," Furtado said at a press conference.

Part of the singer's donation will go towards the creation of a grant that will match donations from youth around the world up to $500,000.

Furtado, who visited Free the Children's development projects in Kenya earlier this year, talked about her passion for the charity's project.

"I left a piece of my heart in Kenya earlier this year and I can't wait to get started on helping girls like the ones I met build a brighter future for themselves, their families and communities."

"When Nelly visited Kenya, she was so confident. She taught us in my community how to be confident," said Susan, a Kenyan student who the singer met on her visit and the charity brought to the Toronto event.

In February of this year, Furtado said that she would be donating a $1-million fee she received for playing a private party in 2007 for then-Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. At the time she did not say which charity would be receiving the funds.

"Making my announcement today allows me to support the work of these amazing people," she explained.

"Absolutely, this is an unusual circumstance," said Free the Children co-founder Craig Kielburger. He reiterated that Furtado expressed a strong commitment to international development.

"As an individual, she wanted to make good. To give it to women, to give it to long-term development," he explained.

Free the Children is a charity devoted to issues surrounding human rights, education and other children's issues around the world. Furtado is one of many celebrity guests, including Shawn Desman, Joe Jonas and Danny Glover, involved in the Toronto event.

Despite the fame and fortune that quickly followed, the Grammy and Juno award winner still finds time in her hectic schedule for charitable endeavours.

Furtado will perform on Sept. 27 during the We Day event at the Air Canada Centre, hosted by Nina Dobrev, star of the hit series The Vampire Diaries, and musician Joe Jonas.

“We Day is a fantastic, fresh, modern event with a focus on the future, positivity and youth engagement,” Furtado told Metro. “It’s a meeting ground for thousands of youth that want to change the world.”

Furtado says that being a mom also influenced her to be more involved in events like We Day.

“The moment I became a mother, I felt like I was part of the global tribe of mothers, and I believe mothers have so much power as role models for their children and also as healers of the planet.”

Young people attending We Day should come away inspired, adds Furtado.

“I would like the youth at We Day to go home feeling energized and brave. It takes bravery to be a true individual, and it’s a life long quest — but the younger we start the better!”

During a journey to Kenya for the CTV documentary, “Nelly Furtado: The Road to Kisaruni,” the Canadian musician met face-to-face with girls starting down the path of higher learning -- and came away from the experience with her outlook on life changed.

While Nelly Furtado has been asked to travel to Africa before, the singer tells CTV.ca that when Artbound came calling, it was finally the right time to go.

Artbound, a non-profit organization volunteer arts organization associated with “Free the Children,” travelled with Furtado and a CTV crew for the opening of an all-girls secondary school in the Maasai Mara region of Kenya.

“I felt like my perspective was in the perfect place to be there and really experience it and engage,” says Furtado.

“There was a lot of joyful tears shed in Kenya. I’ve never felt such joy. We had this jam, everyone was dancing and singing all the African songs they learned, it was literally like bliss.”

In the Maasai Mara, fewer than five percent of girls attend high school, with even less attending university after.

Hailing from Victoria, British Columbia, Furtado is a world-wide superstar that has sold over 20 million records, known for her hits “I’m Like a Bird,” “Maneater,” and “Powerless.”

Like many musicians before her that have been inspired by the African continent, Furtado discovered the appeal of their indigenous music and plans to incorporate the Kenyan Boys Choir into future recordings.

“Going there and hearing the melodies and learning African songs was haunting,” says Furtado.

“I felt like I was hearing ancient tones and references, rhythms.”

Not only was Furtado inspired musically by the trip -- she also was inspired personally.

“You go to a small place in the middle of Kenya, and all these people are working together to make their community better, all these people grounded in this spiritual reality, love and goodness, hope and hard work -- you have hope for the world,” says Furtado.

“I feel like, ‘Humanity, we haven’t ruined ourselves.’ Half the world is still in touch with what it means to be human. You realize that if you can help the people who haven’t been given the opportunity, that you can help each other, and they can teach us too, a lot.”

Furtado also confronted some of her own misconceptions while on the trip.

“I didn’t realize there was such a juxtaposition of modern technology and the old ways. People preserving traditions, but at the same time, embracing new ones… the mothers in the communities, they’re paying for their aluminum roof with their cell phones, but still wearing traditional Maasai clothing, beading, performing traditional tasks at home.”

“Nelly Furtado: The Road to Kisaruni” airs Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7pm on CTV. Furtado will also perform at the 2011 We Day event on September 27 in Toronto. The event will also feature performances by City and Colour, Classified, Kardinal Offishal, Nikki Yanofsky and Shawn Desman.

Nelly Furtado is a month or two away from completing the songs on her fifth album, Lifestyle, which the Victoria native expects will be in stores by next spring.

By the time the record arrives, it will be nearly two years past its initial release date - a production delay which Furtado has no problem explaining. "It's been a long process, but my albums always take forever, even when I think they are going to be fast," Furtado, 32, said this week.

"I go through processes. I like time to recreate myself and live. If you don't change, the music doesn't change, either. And that takes time."

Furtado, who lives in Toronto, underwent a dramatic change of her own earlier this year.
The multiple Juno and Grammy award winner travelled to Kenya for eight days in February to accompany Artbound, a non-profit volunteer arts organization associated with the children's charity Free The Children. The project that piqued her interest was the building of an all-girls secondary school in Maasai Mara, an area of Kenya where fewer than five per cent of the girls who live in the region have an opportunity to attend high school.

Due to budgetary concerns, only 40 girls were accepted into the new school, named Kisaruni, resulting in heartbreak for the hundreds who applied but did not get in.
The magnitude of the project struck Furtado immediately and she signed on for the trip. Her experience was captured on film and woven into the documentary, Nelly Furtado: The Road to Kisaruni.

"It sounds like such a cliché but it was really a life-changing experience," said Furtado, 32. "Anything that impactful is going to change your perspective. It made me realize that no matter where somebody is, all that matters is that they are given an opportunity."

Furtado was given an opportunity of her own, years ago, which she eventually turned into a successful recording career. Over the course of four studio albums and collaborations with the likes of Michael Bublé, Justin Timberlake, Elton John and Bryan Adams, she has become one of pop music's most bankable and versatile performers.

She has a daughter, Nevis, and husband, Demacio Castellón, who support her as she leads a truly unconventional life. That is something Furtado says she has never taken for granted.
Her trip to Africa further reinforced her thoughts on the matter.
Playing music for a living is a gift, Furtado says, but without the help and support of family and friends, a major piece of the puzzle is missing.

"I think what struck me the most was that feeling of hope for the future. I used to garner inspiration from the past, and get inspired by other decades or romanticize other eras.
"I would feel bleak about the future, because it's so easy to be negative about the world. But after my trip, I realized that half the world is still very in touch with what it means to be human - the spiritual side, the cultural side, the community aspect and traditions."

As a result of her trip, and the friendships that emerged, Furtado says she's making every effort to be a better person. It's hard not to want that, she says, after meeting the people of Maasai Mara.

"The whole experience was quite haunting. I couldn't get the songs out of my head, I couldn't get people's faces out of my head. It was really moving."

Furtado forged some unique friendships while shooting the documentary, which focuses both on the journey to build the school and the students who will one day fill its classroom.
She became close with one student who did not get accepted into the school, a bright light named Susan who was adopted by her mother, Monica, at age four. The mother and daughter wind up playing a central role in The Road to Kisaruni, and have since become a big part of Furtado's life.
"The first day I was there was a big celebration. The community was there and there was a ribbon cutting. The next day I met Susan, who didn't get into the school and who is pining to be with her friends at this great school, and who wants an education to become a doctor. It made me realize there are thousands of Susans out there.

"That made me feel hopeful for the future. There's billions of other girls just like them around the world who, given the opportunity, will also flourish and have their dream come true."
Furtado says she will return to the area next year, with her own daughter in tow. She has kept close ties with others who appear in the film, including the Kenyan Boys Choir. Furtado is performing with the choir in Toronto on Sept. 27 and will head into the studio with them before they return home.
Furtado expects the collaboration will appear on her new album.

Her African journey, and all that came out of it, proved to Furtado how powerful music truly is. At one point in the film, the students ask her to sing one of her songs. She chooses Powerless (Say What You Want), a song she wrote about empowering oneself.

Later in the film, the choir serenades her with a version of the song.
"They still get together and sing, just for any reason," she said of the people in Maasai Mara. "It's part of their daily lives. When I wrote the song Powerless, I was feeling a certain emotion.
"Many years later, they had never heard that song and I sang it for them. They were immediately begging me to learn it. It was surreal. Music is that strong. Music is that universal."

Nelly Furtado cherishes the energy burst of feeling like a newcomer.

“I think that’s why I kind of go away for so long in between CDs, so I can feel fresh and new when I come out again,” said the well-known Canadian singer, who has a new CD on tap for next year.

But Furtado also felt rejuvenated after a recent trip to Africa, which was documented in the TV special Nelly Furtado: The Road to Kisaruni. It debuts Saturday, Sept. 10 on CTV.

“I had been invited to go to Africa in the past for different things, but this was kind of the right moment for me,” said Furtado, 32.

“I got asked by CTV to do a documentary over there in collaboration with Free The Children and a Toronto group called Artbound, which is all about building arts programs in schools around the world.

“So it was a big collaborative project. It was a big group of people, almost like summer camp in a way. But it was a real whirlwind, educational experience for me.”

As shown in The Road to Kisaruni, Furtado took particular interest in a young girl named Susan, who had just missed the cut to get one of the coveted spots available in the new school. Susan still dreamed of becoming a doctor.

“I met so many people in Kenya who haven’t forgotten about community, haven’t forgotten about spirituality, haven’t forgotten about helping out each other,” Furtado said. “We need to feel that and be exposed to that here in North America, so hopefully the documentary does that a little bit.

“Leaving Africa, I really felt hopeful about humanity, about the future.”

Furtado has been involved in many humanitarian projects, and TV viewers will see her in yet another one on Oct. 30, when MuchMusic airs highlights from the upcoming We Day festivities in Toronto and Vancouver.

Furtado said that for her, the key to juggling music, family and charity work is to understand that those elements don’t always have to be divided. Furtado’s music certainly has drawn inspiration from cultures around the globe.

“I think Western artists are seeking international influences now more than ever,” Furtado said. “I always have. I don’t feel like such an alien any more.”

The music business has changed a lot, however, since Furtado broke onto the scene in 2000 with the single I’m Like a Bird and the CD Whoa, Nelly!

“I feel lucky, actually, because I feel like I was part of the last wave of artists with original, I guess, record deals, really,” Furtado said.

“Contracts have changed a lot. So I feel lucky.

“Obviously touring has become a lot more important for artists. I just feel lucky that I’ve had a long career. I still love writing songs, I love producing. The business has changed, but it has changed in interesting ways - more good than bad, actually.”

Really? How so?

“Music is more eclectic now than it ever has been,” Furtado said. “It’s a time for new and exciting ideas, though. For anyone who has entrepreneurial ideas about music, it’s a good time for them, because there are opportunities for music to reach people in brand new ways.

“I just read that Bjork is doing residencies for her new tour. Instead of doing a traditional tour, she’s doing, like, residencies in eight cities over three years. But that’s brilliant, you know, for thinkers like that to come up with new ideas.

“Sign me up, I want to buy a ticket.”

The girls, as their mothers know, are the leaders of tomorrow and educating them is a top priority.

“I know that this school represents something magical,” said Furtado in the documentary. “It’s kind of a pioneer project in a way because it’s the first school of its kind in the area and that’s very special.”

NELLY FURTADO: THE ROAD TO KISARUNI introduces Furtado and viewers to the 40 girls admitted to the school and also to Susan, the girl who was number one on the waiting list. Vibrant, hopeful, eager and bright, Susan dreams of being a doctor; her meeting with Furtado delivers an unexpected connection and Furtado is genuinely touched by her strength and desire to learn. Through Furtado’s personal experience, her candid commentary, and genuine heart break, she shares with viewers a story about hope, and uses music as a common denominator between cultures and the strength of women as they champion their families and work for change for their daughters.

“It was just extraordinary to be in Kenya and to meet all the people and to share music and celebrate art,” said Furtado. “I’m completely changed and really excited about the future. It’s made me want to try harder as a woman, as a person, as a mother and as a citizen of the world.”

Artbound is a non-profit volunteer initiative in support of Free The Children. Nelly Furtado helps celebrate club's new addition

The Dovercourt Boys' and Girls' Club began a new chapter with pop star Nelly Furtado on hand as it celebrated the opening of its eagerly anticipated second floor addition, Thursday evening, June 23.

The ceremony marked the end of the club's capital campaign, 'Through the Roof,' and an opportunity to show off the club's completed expansion and revitalization.

As it resumes its popular programs, the club's members will benefit from more than 4,500-square feet of new space, including a greenhouse, a theatre-dance studio, an astronomy and science room, a teen lounge and a computer lab.

Perhaps most importantly, the club, located in the Dupont Street and Dovercourt Road area, will be able to accommodate 150 to 200 additional kids in its after-school and camp programs.

The club hosted a VIP reception followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday, starting at 4:30 p.m., in the gymnasium at 180 Westmoreland Ave.

One of the most popular VIPs at the event - as far as the kids were concerned - was pop singer-songwriter Furtado, the Through the Roof campaign's honorary children's ambassador. Furtado has become a familiar face at the club, having hosted its 50th anniversary charity gala.

As the singer made her way into the gym, children jumped up to greet her. Furtado happily signed autographs and posed for photos.

Former club members, Melissa Aiello and Adam Volpentest, kicked off the ceremony with a musical performance.

"The revitalized club facilities will provide hundreds of boys and girls with additional and accessible space to house a variety of recreational programs and services for years to come," said MP Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for FedDev Ontario in a letter, which was read during the ceremony. "Congratulations on your hard work on this important community project."

Guest speaker Donna Cansfield, MPP for Etobicoke Centre, said she was pleased to be able to celebrate the expansion and rehabilitation.

"I feel absolutely delighted to be here in the company of young people... they make you feel good, they make you smile. It reminds you of why you do what you do every day - children are our future," she said. "I want to say to each and every one of you who helped and participated: Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you."

Operations Manager Justin Hanna said Thursday's ceremony symbolized a new beginning. Completion of the expansion, said Hanna, ensures that the club will meet the needs and opportunities of operating in the 21st century.

"I stand here humbled, to realize that our club is ready for our future. We're open for business in our new building," he said.

The Dovercourt Boys' and Girls' Club has been serving Torontonians since 1957 and in that time has provided quality and affordable adult, after-school and camp programs to more than 30,000 individuals.
